Non-Intel Motherboards
- Intel® 82801DB I/O Controller Hub (ICH4) or newer
Intel chipsets utilizing the Intel® 82801DB I/O controller hub (ICH4) or newer support USB 2.0. The Intel® Chipset Identification utility can determine if your system has this I/O controller hub. Intel® 82801DB or newer USB Controller OS Requirements
| Operating System |
USB 2.0 requirements |
| Windows* XP |
USB 2.0 drivers are provided in Service Pack 1* (SP1) for Windows XP, which is available through Windows Update*. |
| Windows* 2000 |
USB 2.0 drivers are available through Windows Update* or Service Pack 4. |
| Windows* 98 (Retail) |
Developers and OEMs should contact Orange Ware*. For end-users, if your device does not ship with Windows 98 drivers, contact your device or system manufacturer. If USB 2.0 drivers are not available, your device will operate at USB 1.1 speeds |
| Linux* |
USB 2.0 support is available in kernel 2.4.19* or later development kernels, or in the 2.4.19 or later production kernel. More information.
Third Party USB Controllers Some motherboards use a USB controller chip from a third party, such as NEC*. Drivers for the USB controller should be provided by the system or motherboard manufacturer. Please refer to the USB Resources and Documentation area below for more information.

| USB 1.1 |
USB Driver Update (for USB 1.1 and earlier): Recent versions of most operating systems (including Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP, and Linux*) include fully functional drivers for the USB port of Intel® chipsets. In order for Device Manager to show what USB controller is in the system, the chipset must be recognized by the operating system. Some systems require the Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility in order for the operating system to fully recognize the chipset. Do I need the Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility?
| Note |
There are no separate USB (version 1.1 and earlier) drivers available for download for Intel® chipsets.
|
| Troubleshooting |
If the manufacturer/vendor of a USB device recommends downloading an Intel® USB driver update as part of troubleshooting your USB device, please contact Microsoft* for USB driver support. Intel manufactures the host controller but the driver is from Microsoft. While the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility provides functionality, it will not install updated USB drivers; these are available from Microsoft.
For further troubleshooting, contact the USB device manufacturer.
