| Important Note |
Only qualified and trained professionals should open a computer system. Please do not follow the instructions listed below or attempt to open a computer system unless you are a qualified and trained professional.
Qualified and trained professionals shall take all necessary precautions to avoid damage to all computer systems, such as but not limited to, disconnecting the power before opening the case, using proper electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions (including ground straps, gloves, ESD mats), having suitable facilities and proper tools and training. | |
If none of the other methods are successful, then if necessary, identifying the Intel® graphics controller located in your computer can usually be done by looking at the motherboard or video card for the graphics controller markings.
Note: Some system manufacturers may void the warranty if you open the computer system case. Check with the manufacturer if you have any concerns about this before proceeding.
Heatsink Note: Some Intel chipset components and graphics controllers might have heatsinks attached to them. Intel strongly recommends that you do not try removing any heatsink or any other device attached to a chipset in order to view the chipset markings. Only trained and qualified professionals should remove the heatsink from Intel chipsets. If an Intel chipset has a heatsink, we recommend using the Intel® Chipset Identification Utility to identify the Intel chipset components.
To identify your graphics controller using the markings, first locate the 15-pin VGA port on the back on the system and see if it is attached to the motherboard or to a separate video card.
If the VGA port is built-in to the motherboard: The system may use an integrated graphics controller or a discrete graphics controller (video down). Follow these steps to determine the graphics controller:
- Use the Intel® Chipset Photo Examples to identify the chipset markings.
- Once you have determined what chipset the system has, refer to the Determine the Graphics Controller page to determine if the chipset has an integrated graphics controller.
- If the chipset identified has an integrated graphics controller, then that is likely the system's graphics controller. If the chipset identified does not have an integrated graphics controller, the system likely has a non-Intel graphics controller (video down). There should be a chip on the motherboard that is the graphics controller. The markings on the chip will indicate what company makes the graphics controller.
If the VGA port is attached to a separate (PCI or AGP) video card: The card or graphics controller chip on the card may contain markings to indicate the manufacturer of the card.
